Containing some of the highest levels of anti-oxidants of any fruit, blackcurrants gain their deep purple hue through their high concentration of antho-cyanins.Antho-cyanins are a type of antioxidant particularly effective in combatting the dangerous effect of free radicals in the body.Whilst most of us will have encountered the fruit as children as a ridiculously over-sugary cordial juice, blackcurrants are in fact better suited - at least for home use - in a smoothie.Although they are already very juicy, their delicate nature not to mention the expense of shop-bought blackcurrants means it's not really suitable for juicing per se - we'll be having smoothies containing a greater of lesser number of blackcurrants, not blackcurrant 'juice'.
